Garden at Midnight/Large-scale Paintings on Wood Panels

GARDEN is a series of large-scale mixed media paintings—9 finished or in-progress—which explores the relationship of “heaven and earth.” These paintings present a visual mythological context that is also personal, poetic and spiritual. The style of this series draws on vernacular architecture and decoration from the Hindu and Mexica cultures among others, a kind of free-form compendium of mythic styles, along with personally derived symbolic landscape and decorative elements. The intensely worked and detailed surfaces, along with paint that reflects light and encourages fairly dramatic shifts in color gives the effect of jewel-like minatures done in grand scale.

Most are paired with mesostics, a simple poetic form created by John Cage, shown here in 'collapsed' form—see www.euph0r1a.net/mesostomatic/what.html.

Hem of Her Skirt/Linked Paintings on Wood Panels

HEM is an on-going series that began as improvisational extracts drawn from the GARDEN series. These paintings are obsessively rendered with plastic gems, faux half-pearls and porcelain roses that are used to signify the kind of repetition and implied counting that is a part of saying mantras or praying with prayer beads or simply keeping/passing time. They are, in a sense, passementerie to the GARDEN paintings and are most usually shown in linked, horizontal groups.
